Global Online Science Labs for Inquiry Learning at School

The Go-Lab Project (Global Online Science Labs for Inquiry Learning at School) is a European collaborative project co-funded by the European Commission (Seventh Framework Programme) and uniting 19 organisations from twelve countries. Go-Lab concentrates on providing access to online laboratories in order to enrich classroom experience in schools as well as learning activities out-of-class.  The overall aim of the Go-Lab Project is to provide students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in science by conducting experiments using modern laboratory equipment by themselves, deepen their knowledge in fundamental sciences, and to motivate them for making scientific carrier in the future.

Targeting students from 10 to 18 years old, Go-lab offers the opportunity to perform personalized scientific experiments with online labs in pedagogically structured and scaffold learning spaces that are extended with collaboration facilities. The online labs can be used in the context of school education, but also for self-regulated learning activities, e.g. by students interested in particular scientific topics. Using the online labs students acquire also competencies and skills needed to perform scientific research and experiments at a professional level, thus, getting prepared for the future start in the science.

Go-Lab offers a set of online labs from worldwide renowned research organizations, such as European Space Agency (ESA, the Netherlands), European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN, Switzerland), NĂșcleo Interactivo de Astronomia (Nuclio, Portugal), as well as multiple universities and institutions. During the project time, Go-Lab will expand the resources for teaching science in schools and the opportunities for the larger science education community to add new online labs to the Go-Lab infrastructure. This infrastructure will also include a social network to encourage teachers to use online labs in their classes and to exchange experience and new methodologies arising out of it.
