University of Glamorgan, UoG (United Kingdom)

The University of Glamorgan is an academic institution located at Pontypridd, Wales in the UK. The Faculty of Health, Sport and Science is home to staff and students in areas including Biology, Chemistry, Health Sciences, Forensics as well as a new specialty in Observational Astronomy. UoG has great experience in national and international research projects. The Faulkes Telescope Project (FTP) is an education partner of Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope (LCOGT), and currently provides web-based real-time access to 1,500 hours of observing time on two 2-metre telescopes located in Hawaii and Australia. This time is dedicated to education and public outreach; the telescopes are available for teachers to be used as part of their classroom and extra-curricular activities, and are fully supported by a range of educational materials and a team of educators and astronomers. The FTP operates a wide range of educational programs with a strong emphasis on teacher training and engaging students in “real science”. Its philosophy is to engage learners making them active participants in a range of astronomical research projects, ranging from observations of the solar system to distant galaxies. Teacher training (both face-to-face and online) is a core component of the FTP educational philosophy.

In Go-Lab, the UoG team is involved in the Go-Lab federation of online labs (WP2), Community Building and Support (WP6), and in the Implementation (WP7). UoG will offer access to the two Faulkes Telescopes in Hawaii and Australia, to scientific data as well as to a series of interactive applications that will be integrated in the classroom practice. UoG will act as the National Coordinator of the project activities in the UK.
